"The Man From Earth" – One of the Best Science Fiction Movies I Ever Watched

May 8, 2010 | By Rakhitha | Filed in: Me, Myself & I, Movies.

What comes to your mind when you think of science fiction movies? Is it million dollar computer graphics, special effects, space ships, high-tech stuff, gibberish about Universe and Astrophysics, Aliens, Action, …..?. If that is what you expect from a science fiction, this movie is not for you. This one has non of that.  From start to end, there is a bunch of professors sitting in a living room and talking while having a drink. It all about what they discuss, The story. Have you been a science fiction fan when you were a kid? Have you read those books that open up your imagination and take it to the limits, and make you want to go even further? This is that kind of story. The story will pull you in like a black hole. In your mind you will live inside the movie, making your own arguments with those professors. This movie simply talks to your imagination, nothing else.

If you are one of those guys like me who skip through or fast forward a movie before deciding to watch it or not, you will definitely decide not to watch this. That is exactly what I did the first time, when I got it from a friend. And then there was one of those days that you don’t have anything to watch and you end up watching whatever you have. That’s how I watched “The Man From Earth”. And it just blew my mind.

Most people do miss this movie simply because they don’t give the movie a fair view, and just skipping through/fast forward first and decide not to watch it. That will not give you any glimpse on what the movie is all about. That’s why I thought of posting something about this movie. I am no good at reviewing anything. So don’t take this as a review. This is more like my highest recommendation to watch this movie. If you need reviews please read about “The Man From Earth” on IMDB. It has some really good reviews and ratings.

By the way, do keep in mind that this movie strongly challenges some religious beliefs. You will not get offended as long as you keep in mind that this is just a fiction. A Damn Good Fiction.

Here is a link to the movie trailer on you-tube. But don’t judge this movie by its trailer. No trailer can do justice to this movie. You have to watch it. Then you will realize why.

I don’t want to give any spoilers. But if you want some you can find them on IMDB user reviews for “The Man From Earth”. Instead of giving you a spoiler, I’ll leave you with a quote from the movie itself, which pretty much sums up the total experience of this movie.

“Do you know those Chinese boxes, one inside other, inside the other, inside the other? I felt like I am at the last box…”

One of the best films I’ve watched in the Sci-fi category. Of course lot of film bugs simply miss this movie because they judge it by the way you’ve mentioned. All they can see is just talking and talking but if they tried a bit; sure they’ll be pulled in. It opens a huge area for one to make his imagination wider than he ever expected. All the problems which has occurred to him finally have a solution.

    Thanks for posting this.

🙂 This film is one of my favorite. It’s true that we shouldn’t judge a film by just watching a trailer or watching the first few minutes of the film.

I recently went to watch a Hindi film because the trailer was good… When the film started I was wondering did we come to see the same movie as we saw in the trailer. And we came out from the hall in the intermission because it was so boring. 🙁

I watched this a few years ago. I too consider it one of the best movies I ever watch.

It is in the same league as “Contact (1997)”.
Watch “Moon (2009)”- it has a very strong story as well.

And if you enjoyed watching the Contact movie, do read the original book by Carl Segan- it is one of the best Science Fiction books ever!
