DailyMirror: "Lanka rejects visa for Akon"

without comments

I don’t like Akon that much anyway. But still I was planing to go to his concert in Sri Lanka. Only because I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to have fun. I did not visit any of the earlier events of international artists. Mostly because of the fears of  being at a large gathering in a country at war. I didn’t have the money to buy tickets anyway. But this time both of the problems are resolved, so I was planing go there. But later I changed my mind. I just don’t want to be around when bombs go off. Probably terrorism is still here, under a different name and a face. I hope that I am wrong. Most probably I am. But if I am right, I don’t want to find that out firsthand. Anyway, based on this news item on dailymirror.lk, Akon event will not happen unless something change in near future. I hope it’s over for good.

Royal Thomian – T20 – 27th March 2010 – Program and Tickets

with one comment

Here comes the program of events lined up for Inaugural RoyTho T20 cricket match. This was an e-mail I received yesterday. It is from the organizing committee of the event. I could not find same information on the web. Therefore I thought it’s good to share.

If you are a royalist looking to buy tickets you can buy them from RCU. RCU website has more information on it. You may find more information also on RoyTho T20 event page on facebook. I am not sure if anyone is planing to do an online broadcast of the match. But most probably you will lose all the fun if you watch it online. Cricket will probably be the least fun part of this event.

When & When Not to Fully Discharge Your Batteries?

with 2 comments

I wanted to write this post after reading “Battery Myths” by Foxhound. It was a very nicely written post on the myth of not recharging the battery until it is fully discharged. It made me want to write a post on maintaining rechargeable batteries. But it took me some time to finalize it. This post is based on knowledge I gained over time when I was trying to look after batteries of mobile phones, digital cameras, laptop and few power backup systems.

In my opinion the biggest culprits of spreading battery myths is not the ‘wise old man’ as Foxhound said. It’s those nice looking sales girls (and guys) working at mobile phone shops. Every time that I have been to one of those shops to buy a phone, I have received exactly the wrong advice on how to charge the phone. Most of those batteries clearly has “Li-Ion” marked on it. But they advice not to charge it until it is fully discharged. Most of my friends have received the same advice. More often than not, people don’t believe it when some one is trying to convince them that they are actually damaging their batteries.

Path to SharePoint – A SharePoint Blog Worth Bookmarking

without comments

I am not a web guy. I have studied php, perl, ASP, ASP.Net, Java Servlets and JSP. I have done few websites with them for fun, studies as well as at my workplace. I have spent about a year working mostly on the web client at my workplace.

But I mostly work on desktop and server-side applications at my job, using C++ and C# and Oracle PLSQL. I spent most of my study time studying java technologies. But when given a challenge, I am one of those guys who never say no. I just do whatever I am given. It helps to keep life interesting. Sitting at a desk and writing code using same language/tool to develop same application can be boring at times.

Ok! I am not writing my resume here. I just wanted to say few words about my background before I share the link to a blog which saved my ass in one of my latest assignments at workplace.

Induruwa Beach Resort, Bentota, Sri Lanka – From an eye of a local

with 5 comments

I am definitely not the guy to give you travel advice. But recently I happen to be in this hotel and it seemed a nice enough place to write something about. So far it’s the best place I have visited. It’s a very nice place with lots of nice views, nice people, nice friendly service, and nice everything. Of course there are things they can improve. But I’ll come to that later in the post.

Induruwa Beach Resort is located at Kaikawala, Bentota, Sri Lanka. When traveling from Colombo, you have to pass Bentota town and reach Kaikawala. When you are traveling down the Galle Road, you can’t miss it.  Hotel entrance is right at the Galle Road.

What I like most about the hotel is, it had the best quality/price ratio out of the hotels that I have visited so far. Full board package at a deluxe room cost around LKR 8000/= for locals. It’s about 85/= USD for non-locals. However it did not include evening tea, which will cost you another hundred bucks (LKR). Room was quite large and comfortable. They have nicely layed out the hotel in a way that you get a good view of the sea where ever you are. Unfortunately I don’t have much snaps of the place to show you, because the idea of writing this came after I left the place.  But you can find plenty of images from google image search or from hotel website. Following are some snaps I took at the beach just outside the hotel.

Royal Thomian – Big Match 2010 – Online Broadcast and Highlights

with 3 comments

This is an update on my earlier post “Royal Thomian – Big Match 2010, Online!“. Live online broadcast of RoyTho 2010 is now working. You can watch it on Lifestyle.lk/Roytho2010. But it’s not free. You have to pay roughly 20 USD to watch it.

However I noticed that you can watch highlights free. If you click live broadcast link on above page, it start playing day 1 highlights. Also you can directly visit www.ustream.tv and watch recorded highlights. Or if you just google for “roytho2010 highlights”, it’s the first link you get. If you just want to follow live score on cricinfo, just click here.

Royal Thomian – Big Match 2010, Online!

with 6 comments

If you are one of those guys who are unable to attend to big match, either because of being out of the country or stuck at work. You can follow it on cricinfo.  Here is the link.

I searched all over the place to see if I can find an online streaming feed of  Big Match, but no luck so far. There is a link called “Live Online Video Broadcast” on “Battle of the Blues” page in stcpta.org. But that leads to a website which is on sale. No video there :S.

If you know a place where you can watch the Big Match online, please comment.

UPDATE: Now the above mentioned link is working. You can watch big match online. However there is a fee. If you already missed day one, you can watch day 1 highlights from here.

Royal-Thomian big match is one of the oldest continuing annual cricketing events in the world. It continued for 130 years. Even the world wars could not stop it. I guess I don’t have to tell you that it is played between Royal College, and St. Thomas’ College. 131st installment of it will start tomorrow, 11th March 2010, at SSC Ground. This is not a full post. I just wanted to say, GO ROYAL.
